For the third consecutive year, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance partnered with the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena. We are beyond thrilled to announce that this year, our float took home the biggest honor of the day, the prestigious Sweepstakes Award! This marks the 100th anniversary of the Sweepstakes Trophy, an award that recognizes the most beautiful entry encompassing float design, floral presentation, and entertainment.
Our parade float theme—“It Began with a Roar”—features a myriad of heartwarming stories from the Zoo’s history including Rex the Lion who inspired the San Diego Zoo. Karen, a Sumatran orangutan, also rides on the float. At 31, she is an inspiration to all from recovering from a lifesaving open heart surgery by Zoo veterinarians. (Read her story here.)
